Estêvão Lopes Morago • Laudate pueri a 7

Estêvão Lopes Morago was a composer of Spanish birth that learned the craft of music at the choir boys school of Évora Cathedral, later occupying the post of chapel master of Viseu Cathedral, where he lived the rest of his life. Among the extant sources of Morago’s music – two choir books from Viseu Cathedral now preserved at the Districtal Archives – we find this Laudate pueri, one of his settings of psalm 112.

The only recording of this work that I know was included in the triple-CD Voces Angelicae, exclusively made of Portuguese polyphony, by early music pioneer group Pro Cantione Antiqua. Although very dated, this discographic work is still a reference to Portuguese repertoire, containing the only recordings of Magalhães Missa De Beata Virgine Maria, and motets and Magnificats by Estêvão de Brito, Manuel Cardoso and Duarte Lobo.
