Since I haven’t published much polyphony for Lent and Holy Week, as usual in early years, this week I will share two works for Easter. The first one is the setting of the Sequence for Easter by Spanish composer Tomás Luis de Victoria. It is scored for eight (SSAT/SATB) and four (SSAT) voices alternated. Polyphony begins with “Dic nobis Maria”. This Sequence was published in the 1600 Missae, Magnificat, Motecta…, a collection of partbooks printed in Madrid comprising mostly polychoral music.
The recording is by Ensemble Plus Ultra, directed by Michael Noone, from the group’s huge undertaking of recording 10 Cds with music of Victoria.
