Josquin/Narváez • Hosanna

Vihuela (3)In this third video of the vihuela music series is another example of the numerous intabulations and glosas on works by the famous Renaissance composer Josquin des Prez (c.1450-1521). This is the “Hosanna” section from the Sanctus of Josquin’s Missa Faysant Regretz, for which are provided two glosas by Luys de Narváez (fl.1526-1549) present in the Quinto libro d’El Delphin de musica, printed in Valladolin in 1538.

Josquin’s “Hosanna” from Missa Faysant regretz is interpreted by The Tallis Scholars, directed by Peter Philips and the correspondent version for vihuela, by Narváez, is interpreted by Dolores Costoyas. The artwork shown during Josquin’s “Hosanna” is the image of Josquin from a facsimile copy of the woodcut from Opus chronographicum orbis (Antwerp, 1611) by Petrus Opmeer and details from The Virgin of chancellor Rolin (c.1435) and The Arnolfini marriage (c.1434) by Jan van Eyck.
