Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina • Jesu Rex admirabilis

The hymn Jesu Rex admirabilis for three voices (originally for SSA, on this recording for SST) by Italian composer Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (c.1525-1596) is one of the first polyphony works that Ensemble da Sé de Angra first performed. Palestrina sets to polyphony two stanzas from St Bernard of Clairvaux’s hymn Jesu dulcis memoria.

This work was recorded at Angra Cathedral, 19 July 2013. In this recording Ensemble da Sé de Angra is Sara Vieira, Carolina Barbosa (superius) and Luís Henriques (tenor).
